چکیده

The lecture is a brief review of the following topics: (i) collective flow phenomena in heavy ion collisions. The data from RHIC indicate robust collective flows, well described by hydrodynamics with expected Equation of State. The transport properties turned out to be unexpected, with very small viscosity; (ii) physics of highly excited matter produced in heavy ion collisions at Tc < T < 4Tc is different from weakly coupled quark-gluon plasma because of relatively strong coupling generating bound states of quasiparticles; (iii) wider discussion of other “strongly coupled systems” including strongly coupled supersymmetric theories studied via Maldacena duality, as well as recent progress in trapped atoms with very large scattering length.

The Fluid Nature of Quark-Gluon Plasma

Collisions of heavy nuclei at very high energies offer the exciting possibility of experimentally exploring the phase transformation from hadronic to partonic degrees of freedom which is predicted to occur at several times normal nuclear density and/or for temperatures in excess of ∼ 170 MeV. Such a state, often referred to as a quark-gluon plasma, is thought to have been the dominant form of m...

From Quark - Gluon Plasma to the Perfect Liquid ∗

After reviewing some basic concepts of the theory of strongly interacting matter at above nuclear energy density and reviewing some salient results of the experimental program at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), these lectures explain why the quark-gluon plasma observed in the RHIC experiments has been called a “perfect liquid.” They then give an introduction to some recent ideas con...

Experimental and Theoretical Challenges in the Search for the Quark Gluon Plasma: The STAR Collaboration’s Critical Assessment of the Evidence from RHIC Collisions

We review the most important experimental results from the first three years of nucleus-nucleus collision studies at RHIC, with emphasis on results from the STAR experiment, and we assess their interpretation and comparison to theory. The theory-experiment comparison suggests that central Au+Au collisions at RHIC produce dense, rapidly thermalizing matter characterized by: (1) initial energy de...

2 00 4 Evolution of Hot , Dissipative Quark Matter in Relativistic Nuclear Collisions

Non-ideal fluid dynamics with cylindrical symmetry in transverse direction and longitudinal scaling flow is employed to simulate the space-time evolution of the quark-gluon plasma produced in heavy-ion collisions at RHIC energies. The dynamical expansion is studied as a function of initial energy density and initial time. A causal theory of dissipative fluid dynamics is used instead of the stan...

According to the extensive ab initio calculations of lattice QCD, the much large energy density available in the heavy-ion collisions at SPS and now at RHIC should be enough to create the quark-gluon plasma (QGP); a new state of matter in form plasma of free quarks and gluons. The new matter discovered at RHIC is a ”nearly perfect” fluid rather than a plasma. The shear viscosity is too small. W...
